Position: Birth Assistant, shared call schedule

Experience required:

• Experience as birth assistant (preferred) or birth doula
• Additional training is provided, as needed
  
  

Responsibilities: 

• Maintain client confidentiality at all times 
• Set-up, clean-up, and pack-up, as needed
• Assist the midwife throughout labor and immediate postpartum, as directed
• Assist in maintaining thorough records throughout labor and IPP 
  
  

Obtain initial certification and maintain proficiency in the following skills: 

• Neonatal resuscitation (NRP)... referrals to upcoming trainings available
• BLS (CPR) for Healthcare Professionals... available through Red Cross or American Heart Association
• NRP practice sessions are available at our office using our NeoNatalie resuscitation dolls
  
  

Obtain and maintain proficiency in the following skills, including but not limited to: 

• Administer medications under midwife’s direction 
• Assist in sterile procedures 
• Auscultate fetal heart tones 
• Obtain maternal vital signs, such as blood pressure 
• Observe universal precautions at all times 

Hours:
On call 2 days per week and the occasional weekend, and as backup to the other birth assistants on an as-needed basis

Wages: 
Birth assistant fee is a percentage of the total birth fee, which varies according to our sliding scale. 

Benefits:

• Access to midwife’s private library including textbooks for required trainings 
• Reimbursement for trainings such as NRP and BLS renewal is available to birth assistants who attend 10 births or more with the practice per year. These must be pre-approved by the midwife for budgeting purposes.
